Exchanging Vows: Saif & Kareena

Here are some pics from their valima. Saif and Kareena wore the same clothes as Saif’s parents…part of Pataudi tradition.

Review: Student of the Year

Karan Johar returns as director and producer with Student Of The Year. As an ardent KJo fan, I was extremely disappointed with the first poster, theatrical trailers, and video songs. However as a die hard KJo and Dharma Productions fan I watched SOTY out of curiosity because it just didn’t have the magical KJo touch. I wanted to know if he would be able to deliver with new faces and a novel story. One needs to be realistic about KJo films in that they are excessive in dramatics, glamour, and beauty. I love the candy floss movies that KJo produces, writes, and directs because somewhere underneath all of it he has a great love story or a gripping storyline. Sadly, this is not the case with SOTY because the story is a mish mash of many of his earlier works such as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and K3G with a touch of Mansoor Khan’s Joh Jeeta Wohi Sikander. This mish mash is extremely disappointing starting with the casting down to the storyline. Sorry KJO your glamorous sets, make believe schools, and designer duds don’t make up for a dud of a movie.
Abhimanyu Singh, played by Sidharth Malhotra, is a middle class student whose made it to St. Teresa’s on scholarship. Rohan Nanda, played by Varun Dhawan is the son of a rich tycoon and is a typical rich spoiled brat. Shanaya, played by Alia Bhatt plays the part of Poo from K3G except she’s not as charming but just as annoying as K3G’s Poo. The story is about two guys and their friendship and the fallout and a stupid school competition that changes all the equations amongst the characters. The story isn’t novel, someone loses and someone wins…and well eventually everybody makes up and it’s a happily ever after (as expected).

A character I was extremely disappointed by was the role that KJo chose for the veteran actor Rishi Kapoor. Rishi Kapoor plays the role of Yoginder Vishist the “gay” (literally) dean of St. Teresa’s. It was so embarrassing and disgusting to see Rishi Kapoor drool all over the coach and John Abraham magazines. I’m just not sure why Rishi Kapoor would stoop to such a level. I get why KJo wrote this role and why he had so many references (KJo we know…you might as well come out and stop projecting your desires into movies… I mean enough of the boys in speedos and over the top characters…it has been obvious from the start…please don’t make it hard for family audiences that like to take their kids to the movies and have to be subjected to such vulgarity).

I’m not quite sure what was going on in KJo’s mind when he decided to direct such a been there done that type of movie. Forget about the stupid storyline, the casting is so disappointing apart from Varun Dhawan. KJo launches Siddharth Malhotra (former model), Alia Bhatt (youngest daughter of Mahesh Bhatt), and Varun Dhawan (youngest son of David Dhawan). Siddharth Malhotra as Abhimanyu is very good looking but is extremely stiff when it comes to emotions and acting. I’m sure he will get some movies based just on his looks but looks alone don’t satisfy viewers. Alia Bhatt was such a miscast for this movie. Alia Bhatt is Shanaiya and is basically Poo from K3G except a very ugly, out of shape version of Poo. They introduce Alia Bhatt as the most beautiful girl at St.Teresa’s but honestly she doesn’t have the screen presence because she cannot act, cannot emote (even in a song she can’t emote), and she’s not pretty. Let’s face it in Bollywood you need to be pretty, gorgeous, or have some highlight (like a smile or gorgeous eyes) that become your trademark…after all it’s a business based on superficiality. And since she chose a superficial candy floss launch she should have dropped a considerable amount of weight, toned up, and maybe get a complete face transplant. It’s one thing to not look the part but its another when you can’t even act the part. I might come across as harsh but I just don’t see what KJo might have seen in Alia. Let’s be real Kajol isn’t gorgeous but she’s an amazing actress and has that “it” factor so it makes up for the “superficial” aspects she might lack as a Bollywood actress. As a Bollywood actress, you have to either be an amazing actress or be incredibly gorgeous to hold the audience’s attention and Alia does not have either of those things. Moving onto Varun Dhawan, Varun doesn’t have a typical “hero” face but he is definitely the better actor of the three newcomers in this movie. Varun has worked hard on his physique and as a debut he’s done a great job acting, dancing, and emoting.
One of the most disappointing movies of this year! It’s extremely, painfully long at 2 hours and 45 minutes. I seriously wanted to walk out half way through the movie….I wouldn’t even recommend this movie for time pass. Honestly, some of the songs are good…so wait for the dvd – hit play on the songs and skip the movie in the theater and on dvds. Save yourself precious time and money. KJo you must be having a mid life crisis. I’ve seen many of your recent interviews where you’re extremely sad about being alone and being 40….but please don’t project your weirdo fantasies and crappy storylines into your movies. If you can’t direct anymore then quit and just produce good movies…that you is something you’re good at…so please just stick to that or wait until you have a sensible story and a great cast. Sadly, even KJo’s lucky mascot Kajol couldn’t help this movie with her 30 second appearance.
Z4B Take: 1 out of 5 stars.

Video Song: Muskaanein Jhooti Hai (Talaash)

Talaash has finally released a video song and the song is so freaking weird…the voice doesn’t suit Kareena even though Kareena looks great in the song…I’m not sure if the soundtrack is going to be that great but at least Talaash will have some great content in the movie…so maybe the music doesn’t count as much lol

What are your thoughts on the video song?

Theatrical Trailer: Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola -Imran Khan & Anushka Sharma

So one of the movies I’ve been eagerly waiting for just released it’s theatrical trailer! I’m a huge fan of most Vishal Bhardwaj movies (barring 7 Khoon Maaf – that was a bit much lol). For those of you who loved Omkara and Kaminey – this one is going to be awesome!

I like that VB movies are always a bit “hatkay” and “out of the box”. The theatrical trailer does just that! Imran Khan is pushing himself with different roles (yup take those pointers from Ranbir Kapoor). I get Anushka Sharma has a great body but she needs to put some clothes on…we get it – you’re a stick model but we don’t need to see that much of you lol

I like the trailer! I’m a VB fan!

Saif and Kareena’s Wedding Pictures!

Here are some of the wedding pictures from Saif and Kareena’s Wedding Pictures! I wonder why they decided to get married…I mean she said getting married isn’t a big deal for the either of them so why do it?! Anyways, here are some pictures from the hyped “Saifeena” wedding.

It’s so cute to see Ranbir dancing with his cousin Karisma! Karisma, Kareena, and Ranbir = One good looking family!

In another news, Karisma Kapoor’s ex Abhishek Bachchan’s sister Shweta Nanda was present at Saifeena’s wedding as well because Shweta is married to Karisma Kapoor’s cousin….I bet it’s awkward for both of them. I feel sorry for Karisma…she shouldn’t have dumped Abhishek and married Sanjay Kapur…because now she’s divorced just because she wanted to marry a rich industrialist….I hope things turn around and look up for Karisma especially after her dud of a comeback movie…I still think she’s a better dance and actress than Kareena…here’s wishing her success

As for Saifeena….why have a valima when you’re going to be drinking right after it?!?! I mean Saif seriously who are you kidding?!

Well the much hyped Saifeena wedding is over! (I wonder why it mattered so much to begin with…she’s been rocking huge rings for 3 years now, they’ve been living together for 4 years and some change…so what’s the big deal lol)  Here’s hoping this marriage sticks for Saifoo 😛

Review: English Vinglish

No spoilers 🙂
English Vinglish is a simple and beautiful Hindi film that takes Sridevi the superstar of the 80’s and transforms her into a Indian homemaker. Shashi Godbole , played by Sridevi, is a mother and wife that manages her family and her small home run business of making ladoos. Gauri Shinde ,wife of Balki (Cheeni Kum and Paa fame) is the director of this wonderful film that tells the story of Sashi ,a middle-aged Maharashtrian housewife who earns her own money by making ladoos and Indian snacks and selling them. A lot of women would identify with Sashi since she is one of those devoted yet taken-for-granted housewifes who are ridiculed for their poor linguistic skills by their families.

While watching this film, I thought about how our mothers (especially desi ones) have their mornings and their life revolve around their family and barely ever find the time to enjoy their “own” time. Shinde does exactly this through the character of Shashi. Even though Shashi does everything to keep her kids and her husband happy it just isn’t enough because she can’t read, write, or speak in English. No matter what Shashi does she is still an embarrassment to her tween daughter and less knowledgeable than her husband. Shinde speaks about how in this day and age if one doesn’t speak English they are considered to be less intelligent even if that isn’t the case at all. English Vinglish is about Shashi’s journey and how she conquers “English” and proves her worth to not only her family but to herself.

Gauri Shinde has done a marvelous job writing such a sensitive yet strong character and strory. The story isn’t completely novel in its content but the treatment and performances make it genuine and memorable. Sridevi brings life to Shashi with subtlety, sensitivity, and strength with an effortless ease. Sridevi is in top form and one cannot believe that she was away from the industry and lime light for fifteen years. Sridevi chose an age appropriate character and story unlike Madhuri’s “comeback “ film “Aaja Nachle”. Irrespective of it being an age appropriate character, Sridevi looks absolutely amazing at age 49. Sridevi looks just as dazzling without any make up and drop dead gorgeous when she adds a bit of make up in the movie. As a huge Sridevi fan, I think this is definitely one her finest performances to date (on par with Sadma ).
The only drawback to the film is the second half which tends to drag a little bit but other than that it’s a great watch.
English Vinglish is a feel good film. An homage to our amazing mothers who work so tirelessly for us even when we don’t appreciate them at various times in our lives due to one reason or another. Go watch this with your family, friends, and moms. Don’t miss this one!

Soundtrack Review: Jab Tak Hai Jaan (AR Rahman)

The last time AR Rahman composed for a Shahrukh Khan movie was Mani Ratnam’s Dil Se and Ashustosh Gowariker’s Swades and the result was one of the most amazing and memorable soundtracks. Eight years later they reunite again but this time for Yash Chopra’s “last directorial venture” and the results are disappointing. As a huge AR Rahman fan this soundtrack is unbelievably dissatisfying, the “fun” tracks aren’t fun enough and the “romantic” tracks aren’t romantic enough. I’ve been trying all week to listen some of the songs…hoping that they’ll grow on me. I still listen to Rahman’s tracks from Rangeela, Dil Se, Bombay, and many more and they have that magic and spark that makes those songs timeless even after two decades. Sadly, Rahman has lost his touch with his recent compositions whether it was Mani Ratnam’s Raavan or Rakesh Mehra’s Delhi 6. Rahman’s Rockstar was a bit better that album only had a few gems as well. (it’s even sadder because those are the only soundtracks I remember that had maybe 1 or 2 good songs but nothing memorable)

Review about the video songs for Challa & Saans:

When I saw the video songs for “Challa” and for “Saans” – I was surprised  in a bad way lol Rabbi Shergill sings the song for “Challa” and that song does not in any way shape or form suit Shahrukh Khan. I don’t know what Rahman was thinking when he had Rabbi sing the song. The song is good but it didn’t belong this movie…it’s more of a sufi-punjabi pop song that should have been a video sing all on its own or been in a different movie with a younger actor. A lot of Bollywood’s songs success is based on the video songs as well and I don’t think this is going to stay etched in anyone’s memory for long because it is truly missing that spark.

Check out the video song here:

Coming to the “romantic” track of “Saans” featuring SRK and Katrina…well where do I begin lol There is no chemistry and SRK is actually giving off these creepy vibes…is he injecting botox around the corners of his lips!?!? I mean he has the ghoulish Joker smile thing going on even while he’s trying to “romance” Katrina. Katrina looks pretty in the song and I suppose she tries her best to emote as much as possible but irrespective of SRK sand Katrina standing around in short shorts or being trapped in a red phone booth…the “love” doesn’t come to life with this song. As for the actual composition of the song, Shreya Ghosal sounds amazing and sweet but the strong “theatrical” beats take away from the “soft romance” that one looks for in a “romantic track”. Mohit Chauhan is definitely a better choice in terms of matching SRK but I didn’t find his voice particularly whimsical or memorable in this particular track.

Overall Soundtrack Review:

Check out the entire soundtrack here:

Ishq Shava – Raghav Mathur, Shilpa Rao

This song is just plain annoying and I’m not sure what it’s doing in this album. I like Shilpa Rao but this song doesn’t do any justice to her voice. The lyrics are so weird…I’ mean how can they expect this song to grow on anyone…just too weird in every aspect from lyrics to the composition itself. -_-

Heer – Harshdeep Kaur

This is a better track than the last one. From the “Katiyan Karun” fame Harshdeep Kaur does a beautiful job singing this song. In my opinion, the composition itself isn’t very Rahman at all but it is still a better composition. The lyrics are very beautiful and we can safely say at this point that SRK or someone must be Punjabi with all the Punjabi in the songs. I still don’t see this song growing on me anytime soon or the need to hit it on replay…something is missing.

Jiya Re – Neeti Mohan

This is another very weird song and composition. The lyrics aren’t that great and I’m surprised that Gulzar (amazing lyricist) penned the lyrics for these weirdo songs as well. Neeti Mohan is a new singer…she has a good voice but not a voice that sticks at all. I’m assuming this is going to the Anushka Sharma’s introduction song…wish she got a better intro song lol Another let down -_-

Jab Tak Hai Jaan – Javed Ali, Shakthisree Gopalan

This is the TITLE TRACK AND IT SUCKS!!! It’s a hodge podge of different music composers’ work in my opinion. It’s like I’m listening to a bad version of “Sajda” from My Name Is Khan. What the freak Rahman!?!? What happened to you after Slumdog Millionaire?!?!? One of the worst title tracks I’ve heard in a very long time…I’d prefer Salman’s “Dabangg” title track to this song lol -_-

Saans (Reprise) – Shreya Ghoshal

So he made Shreya sing this song on her own…you get it…a few instrument changes to make it slightly different but not to its advantage . Too slow and not memorable enough. I appreciate Rahman’s slow songs but this one is off the mark…yet again.

Ishq Dance – Instrumental

What kind of instrumental track is this?!?! How can anyone dance to this thing….It’s not even worth analyzing lol skip it!

Jab Tak Hai Jaan – The Poem

So the poetry is probably the best thing about this album lol It’s a bit cheesy but YRF romantic films always have that touch of cheesiness when it comes to some of their romantic movies. I personally liked the poetry but not enough for me to want to buy this album or even buy a track off of iTunes….

Z4B Take: AR Rahman fans you are going to be utterly disgusted and disappointed. There isn’t one song that grows on you even after you give it some time (believe me I tried…it didn’t work). It’s also disappointing for Yash Chopra because his romantic movies are famous for the songs whether it was Kabhi Kabhi,Chandni, Darr, Dil Toh Pagal Hai,etc…sadly this is Yash Chopra’s  last directorial venture and the soundtrack is anything but memorable or mesmerizing…Yash ji you should have gone with someone like Vishal-Shekhar or Salim-Sulaiman….it would have suited you and your banner much more than what Rahman has composed for your last film.

Z4B rating: 2 out of 5 stars

“Saans” – New Song from YRF’s Jab Tak Hain Jaan

Yash Raj has released it’s next song from Jab Tak Hai Jaan titled “Saans”. I’m a huge AR Rahman fan but I’m not sure if I’m completely in love with this romantic song. There is too much going on with all the instruments and it’s too dramatic for a love song. I think Shreya Ghosal sounds lovely in the song but I think they should’ve opted for someone other than Mohit Chauhan for this song. I think this song will take some time to grow on me…I hope.

Visually, I’m not in  love with it…I just don’t see the chemistry between SRK and Katrina. I love SRK but for some reason opposite Katrina he looks like he’s getting too old for these sort of roles…or maybe its the fact that he has no on screen chemistry with Kat.

At this point…I’m going to watch this movie out of curiosity and NOT excitement…I wish I could have been as excited as I used to be about Yash Raj and SRK movies.

Shahrukh, as a huge fan….you seriously need to step up your game because lately (other than the Don franchise) you have been lackluster in everything you’ve been doing. In order for you to survive, you need to carefully choose your roles (take pointers from Aamir or even from Ranbir Kapoor). Stop this nonsense before its too late!

What are your thoughts on the new song by AR Rahman? What are your thoughts about the video?

Madhuri & Sridevi on the sets of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa for the first time ever!

If you’re a bollywood fan/fob like I am then you know how big this coming together of the yesteryear Bollywood Divas is to folks like us! I have to say I never thought this day would come! And wow both of them are so fake to each other lol I guess those rumors in bollywood are right! Two Actresses can NEVER be friends lol I like how they’re tying to play nice haha.

I think Sridevi looks stunning but she’s so fake nowadays in her “real” life appearances…I prefer Sridevi in “reel” life lol Madhuri  is awesome as always but I think she doesn’t look as stunning as Sridevi but that might be because she didn’t get as much botox or surgery as Sridevi (its the truth peepz – check out the old pics – Sri got a nose job and so much more done – she looks fab – she did know when to say no to the knife)

Additionally, its worth watch Karan Johar dance to SOTY’s “Radha” – lmao -ya’all know what I’m thinking – all those rumors have to be TRUE haha!

What are your thoughts?

Check out the video:

FF to 2:20 to about 3:30 to see the fake Sridevi and Madhuri Act lol

FF to 9:00 to about 10:15 to see Madhuri and  (she makes an effort Sri doesn’t lol) Sridevi

FF to 13:00 to about 14:05 to see Karan Johar break it down to the song “Radha” from SOTY haha

SRK vs. Ajay Devgn on November 13, 2012

Ajay Devgn is a versatile actor probably more than Shahrukh Khan, sadly my loyalty like many others lies with Shahrukh Khan. I’m not sure why Ajay Devgn is going to release his home production Son of Sardar the same day as Shahrukh Khan’s Jab Tak Jaan. Sure SOS has a huge star cast like Sanjay Dutt, Juhi Chawla, and Sonakshi Sinha but it’s not match for the first time pairing of the non-actor pretty girl Katrina Kaif and Shahrukh Khan (sorry guys I just don’t get how Katrina gets by just on looks in Bollywood…I wish she learned how to act maybe then she’s be compared to the likes of Aishwarya Rai…Kats needs to deliver in the acting department…pretty can only take you so far lol) Coming back to SOS, I probably will go see it in the theater because I love my share of the bollywood tadka type of movie but I will not see it on November 13th. Ajay needs to back it up…sure he has his share of Rs.100 Crore movies to his credit but then again no one I mean no one is King Khan…

Check out the song promo from SOS:
