Soundtrack Review: Jab Tak Hai Jaan (AR Rahman)

The last time AR Rahman composed for a Shahrukh Khan movie was Mani Ratnam’s Dil Se and Ashustosh Gowariker’s Swades and the result was one of the most amazing and memorable soundtracks. Eight years later they reunite again but this time for Yash Chopra’s “last directorial venture” and the results are disappointing. As a huge AR Rahman fan this soundtrack is unbelievably dissatisfying, the “fun” tracks aren’t fun enough and the “romantic” tracks aren’t romantic enough. I’ve been trying all week to listen some of the songs…hoping that they’ll grow on me. I still listen to Rahman’s tracks from Rangeela, Dil Se, Bombay, and many more and they have that magic and spark that makes those songs timeless even after two decades. Sadly, Rahman has lost his touch with his recent compositions whether it was Mani Ratnam’s Raavan or Rakesh Mehra’s Delhi 6. Rahman’s Rockstar was a bit better that album only had a few gems as well. (it’s even sadder because those are the only soundtracks I remember that had maybe 1 or 2 good songs but nothing memorable)

Review about the video songs for Challa & Saans:

When I saw the video songs for “Challa” and for “Saans” – I was surprised  in a bad way lol Rabbi Shergill sings the song for “Challa” and that song does not in any way shape or form suit Shahrukh Khan. I don’t know what Rahman was thinking when he had Rabbi sing the song. The song is good but it didn’t belong this movie…it’s more of a sufi-punjabi pop song that should have been a video sing all on its own or been in a different movie with a younger actor. A lot of Bollywood’s songs success is based on the video songs as well and I don’t think this is going to stay etched in anyone’s memory for long because it is truly missing that spark.

Coming to the “romantic” track of “Saans” featuring SRK and Katrina…well where do I begin lol There is no chemistry and SRK is actually giving off these creepy vibes…is he injecting botox around the corners of his lips!?!? I mean he has the ghoulish Joker smile thing going on even while he’s trying to “romance” Katrina. Katrina looks pretty in the song and I suppose she tries her best to emote as much as possible but irrespective of SRK sand Katrina standing around in short shorts or being trapped in a red phone booth…the “love” doesn’t come to life with this song. As for the actual composition of the song, Shreya Ghosal sounds amazing and sweet but the strong “theatrical” beats take away from the “soft romance” that one looks for in a “romantic track”. Mohit Chauhan is definitely a better choice in terms of matching SRK but I didn’t find his voice particularly whimsical or memorable in this particular track.

Ishq Shava – Raghav Mathur, Shilpa Rao

This song is just plain annoying and I’m not sure what it’s doing in this album. I like Shilpa Rao but this song doesn’t do any justice to her voice. The lyrics are so weird…I’ mean how can they expect this song to grow on anyone…just too weird in every aspect from lyrics to the composition itself. -_-

Heer – Harshdeep Kaur

This is a better track than the last one. From the “Katiyan Karun” fame Harshdeep Kaur does a beautiful job singing this song. In my opinion, the composition itself isn’t very Rahman at all but it is still a better composition. The lyrics are very beautiful and we can safely say at this point that SRK or someone must be Punjabi with all the Punjabi in the songs. I still don’t see this song growing on me anytime soon or the need to hit it on replay…something is missing.

Jiya Re – Neeti Mohan

This is another very weird song and composition. The lyrics aren’t that great and I’m surprised that Gulzar (amazing lyricist) penned the lyrics for these weirdo songs as well. Neeti Mohan is a new singer…she has a good voice but not a voice that sticks at all. I’m assuming this is going to the Anushka Sharma’s introduction song…wish she got a better intro song lol Another let down -_-

Jab Tak Hai Jaan – Javed Ali, Shakthisree Gopalan

This is the TITLE TRACK AND IT SUCKS!!! It’s a hodge podge of different music composers’ work in my opinion. It’s like I’m listening to a bad version of “Sajda” from My Name Is Khan. What the freak Rahman!?!? What happened to you after Slumdog Millionaire?!?!? One of the worst title tracks I’ve heard in a very long time…I’d prefer Salman’s “Dabangg” title track to this song lol -_-

Saans (Reprise) – Shreya Ghoshal

So he made Shreya sing this song on her own…you get it…a few instrument changes to make it slightly different but not to its advantage . Too slow and not memorable enough. I appreciate Rahman’s slow songs but this one is off the mark…yet again.

Ishq Dance – Instrumental

What kind of instrumental track is this?!?! How can anyone dance to this thing….It’s not even worth analyzing lol skip it!

Jab Tak Hai Jaan – The Poem

So the poetry is probably the best thing about this album lol It’s a bit cheesy but YRF romantic films always have that touch of cheesiness when it comes to some of their romantic movies. I personally liked the poetry but not enough for me to want to buy this album or even buy a track off of iTunes….

Z4B Take: AR Rahman fans you are going to be utterly disgusted and disappointed. There isn’t one song that grows on you even after you give it some time (believe me I tried…it didn’t work). It’s also disappointing for Yash Chopra because his romantic movies are famous for the songs whether it was Kabhi Kabhi,Chandni, Darr, Dil Toh Pagal Hai,etc…sadly this is Yash Chopra’s  last directorial venture and the soundtrack is anything but memorable or mesmerizing…Yash ji you should have gone with someone like Vishal-Shekhar or Salim-Sulaiman….it would have suited you and your banner much more than what Rahman has composed for your last film.

Z4B rating: 2 out of 5 stars
