“Challa” – Song- Jab Tak Hai Jaan

AR Rahman is working with Yash Raj for the first time with Jab Tak Hai Jaan. This is the first song that YRF put out there for the audiences and I’m not quite sure if I buy that voice as SRK’s …I love that voice I just don’t think it matches Shahrukh Khan at all. His mannerism and behavior seems way too exaggerated in this song, somehow he pulled this off with a lot more panache when he was Raj or Rahul lol  I love SRK with a guitar or a banjo (I mean SRK made the banjo famous for me with DDLJ) but I’m not sure about him singing this song lol However, I totally love how this song has Yash Raj written all over it. This song trailer has peeked my interest more than the theatrical trailer which I guess is a good thing. I’m hoping AR Rahman produces a fantastic music album especially with a Yash Raj film.

What are your thoughts?

Review: Heroine

Heroine – A Madhur Bhandakar film. As a fan of Chandni Bar, Page 3, and Fashion – Herione is a major let down in many ways. It’s true that Madhur Bhandakar films are a form of tabloid journalism injected with steroids but the effect in his earlier movies was far greater because some where it was laced with some sense of realism. Bhandakar’s films are known to be sensational, sleazy, and scandolous however Bhandakar gets too caught up in all of the 3 S’s and loses the film and fails to project the under belly of Bollywood in a realistic fashion. Bhandakar promised in many of his interviews that this particular film would be nothing like his earlier films, particularly Fashion – sadly it is Fashion in reverse but a very disappointing “Bollywood expose” sort of rendition.

Heroine was  supposed to be the audience’s chance to see  the dirt, manipulation, and politics that come with  being a part of the Indian Film Industry. Initially, the thought of getting a peek into the life of an actress in Bollywood was so exciting but ten minutes into the movie I was already disappointed. Heroine misses the mark right from the start even though Bhandarkar tries his best to grab the attention of the viewer with the first scene…but I already could see that this was a mish mash of Fashion but done much much more poorly. Sure Bhandarka tries to make it interesting (but fails because this is so expected from him..)by adding in excessive  alcoholism, pill popping, a sex tape (did Kim Kardashian inspire him lol IDIOT), lesbianism, and revolving affairs…the list is that long and still it didn’t entertain me one bit. Each frame, each character was so expected. By the way , the supporting cast needs to go and learn how to act…not one person in the supporting cast provided a convincing performance. The gay designers or the ‘superstars’ all sucked in this movie. Arjun Ramphal was wasted in this movie and he should have passed on this one…I’m not quite sure what he got out of this one…the same goes for Randeep Hooda. They were good but wasted because this was a one woman show – HEROINE – Kareena Kapoor’s chance to prove that she can act and that she isn’t just a piece of decoration in Bodyguards and Ra. Ones.  Quite honestly, I find my filmy magazines more entertaining than this movie. Heroine is predictable right from the start…performances, story, and even the music (the music is a rip off of Fashion in so many ways…Fashion had good music…Heroine’s music is trashy and boring as well).

There was so much hype about how Kareena Kapoor was born to play this role…Heroine. And I want to say “puhhhh-llll-eazzzee”. Kareena Kapoor as Mahi Arora is convincing to a certain degree. It’s evident that she puts her all into playing the bi-polar, pill-popping, alcholic, and declining superstar Mahi but the script and dialogues do not allow Kareena Kapoor to shine in this movie. There was so much talk about how the dialogues and script are so “hatkay” but they were so predictable and such a letdown in many ways.  Adding “babes” and throwing around “f-bombs” don’t make a movie any more realistic, interesting, or relatable -it makes it super annoying and fake Madhur babes! ( I seriously hope you win Zero awards for this movie – there is no originality at all) I’m not a huge Kareena fan but I did love her as Geet in Jab We Met and that was the last time I liked her and this holds true even now. There was so much hype about Kareena’s performance in this movie that I specifically went to go see if it was actually true…sadly I wasn’t wowed at all. Since Heroine is a crappier version of Fashion I can’t help but compare the performances….Priyanka was amazing in every frame and her breakdown was so convincing and so was her rise…as for Kareena – she was good but not great. I wasn’t moved by her performance and I didn’t connect with her character at all. I didn’t feel sad, bad, or happy for Mahi (Kareena) – I was just annoyed throughout the movie. Kareena was good in a few sequences but I just wasn’t convinced…sorry Bebo…ya might want to try again for your National Award (I hope she doesn’t get it because she does NOT deserve it – this performance is not memorable at all – its good but that’s about it).

The rest of the cast isn’t even worth mentioning lol Either they are really good actors like Arjun Ramphal and Randeep Hooda who have been completely wasted or other actors that cannot act for the life of them and should just quit and hide their faces lol

I don’t give out spoilers in my reviews just my analysis but if you watched Fashion…then I guess I spoiled it a bit for you lol But believe me you are NOT missing anything special. Save your 12 bucks there are tons of good movies coming up in October and beyond…better yet go watch Barfi for the 2nd time if you must spend your money. 😉

Z4B Take: 1 out of 5 (1 for Kareena Kapoor – she tries to save the film but only succeeds half way…) Disgustingly, Disappointing 2.5 hours of my life wasted. I want it back. Watch it only if you’re a Kareena Kapoor fan (and well do it at home lol) Hoping Bebo starts choosing better roles because she has the potential of being a great actress but for now she remains “eye candy”.

New Promo: Jab Tak Hai Jaan

So YRF finally put out the new promo of Jab Tak Hai Jaan! However, I’m not completely excited…there are parts of this new promo that I like and parts that I feel are too “old school filmy”(not in a good way!). Based on the promos, I don’t like the pairing of Katrina Kaif with Shahrukh Khan…I don’t feel the spark or the chemistry…and having Katrina bounce around in a mini skirt and showing off her midriff  does not add to the romantic quotient! Katrina looks pretty as always but she has a long way to go in terms of emoting properly! I loved the parts with Anushka Sharma, I honestly feel like she’s going to walk away with the appreciation and awards even though she isn’t the lead…kinda like Dil Toh Pagal Hai where Karisma Kapoor walked away with the appreciation and awards even though she wasn’t the lead. The story based on the trailers seems straightforward – a pair fell in love, one must have betrayed the other or one must have died – and the struggles that come with that…at least that’s what I’m guessing based on all the shayari (poetry).  I also don’t love the background score with this particular promo and what is up with the whole homage to “Border” with all the bombs going off behind Shahrukh Khan…I get it – he’s an army officer enough of it already…I mean King Khan played a similar role in “Veer-Zara” from the looks of it…here’s hoping its nothing like VZ and more of an original romantic movie!

What are your thoughts? Do you love the promo?

Top 15 New & Exciting Movie Developments!

I’m so excited about all the upcoming movies in 2013! Amazing star casts, first rate directors, and so much more! These are some of the movies that I’m looking forward to…they probably won’t release until mid to late 2013-14 but they have me so excited that I had to share some of the news! I’ll be sharing more information as soon as there are more developments! So be sure to check out this space!

1. P.K. – directed by Rajkumar Hirani of 3 Idiots and Munnabhai fame. Starring- Aamir Khan, Anushka Sharma, & Sushant Rajput Singh (he will be debuting early next year – but is famous for his role on Zee Tv’s Pavitra Rishta ❤ him!)

2. Ram-Leela – directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali . Starring – Ranvir Singh (Band Baaja Baraat fame) and Deepika Padukone. There was a lot of back and forth regarding this movie with the casting of the actress. Initially it was supposed to be Kareena Kapoor but she backed out because she wanted to get paid A LOT more than SLB was willing to give her. Then there were talks of Priyanka Chopra but he felt she wouldn’t suit the part because she was “too dusky” (stupid reason!). Then they roped in Deepika Padukone – so DP it is!

3. Once Upon A Time in Mumbai 2 – directed by Milan Lutharia (The Dirty Picture fame). The first movie was fabulous with Ajay Devgan and Emraan Hashmi so I’m definitely looking forward to the sequel with an entirely new cast. Starring – Akshay Kumar, Sonali Bendre (she’s making her comeback with this movie – not that I missed her because she wasn’t an amazing actress or anything but it’ll be good to see her grace the silver screen again since Kal Ho Na Ho), Imran Khan, and Sonakshi Sinha

4. Dhoom 3 – directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya and produced by Yash Raj Entertainment. If you loved Dhoom and Dhoom 2 you’re definitely going to LOVE this one. They are currently shooting a lot of action sequences in Chicago (my new home town) and it has a great cast and awesome production company backing them – this one is going to definitely cause some major Dhoom when it releases next year! Starring – Aamir Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Udhay Chopra, & Katrina Kaif.

5.Satyagraha – directed by Prakash Jha (Rajneeti fame – AMAZING MOVIE with Powerful Performances!). Prakash Jha is known for making some amazing movies with politics as the subject but he makes it so riveting that I just can’t see how I’ll pass this one up with such a great cast. Additionally, this is the first time in years – since Dev – that Kareena Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan will be in a movie together, that alone makes me want to go watch the movie. Kareena seems to be choosing more performance oriented roles – FINALLY! Starring – Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgan, Arjun Ramphal, Kareena Kapoor, Manoj Bajpayee.

6. Untitled Zoya Akthar Movie- directed by Zoya Akthar. This movie is apparently supposed to be about Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akthar -their story as sibilings, etc. I’m most excited about the buzz surrounding this project because it might have real life cousins Ranbir Kapoor & Kareena Kapoor playing the parts of Farhan & Zoya! Starring – Ranbir Kapoor  and Kareena Kapoor.

7. Besharam – directed by Abhinav Kashyap (Dabangg fame). I’m looking forward to this movie because it’s being produced by Anurag Kashyap (who produces unconventional bollywood films that hit the viewer with amazing performances – Gangs of Wasseypur fame). Additonally, this movie might have Ranbir Kapoor opposite Parineeti Chopra (Ishaqzaade fame and Priyanka Chopra’s cousin) I think this pair would work wonders because both are known to give some great performances. Starring – Ranbir Kapoor & Parineeti Chopra (maybe..fingers crossed she gets this project!)

8. Bombay Velvet – directed by Anurag Kashyap (Gangs of Wasseypur fame). This movie is supposed to be a period film as well but the star cast sounds awesome with a fresh pairing of Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma. There isn’t much out about the plot because this movie will be made once Besharam is made – so this movie goes on the floors April 2013…a lot of waiting to do – but I’m sure it’ll be worth the wait!

9.Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola – directed by Vishal Bhardwaj (Omkara and Kaminey fame). Starring – Imran Khan and Anushka Sharma. Excited about the fresh pairing and because it is a VISHAL BHARDWAJ movie!

10. Kai Po Che! – directed by Abhishek Kapoor (Rock On! fame). Produced by the makers of Rang De Basanti. Based on the novel of the same guy that wrote 3 Idiots! Huge fan of Sushant Rajput Singh (Pavitra Rishta Fame) – I’m so excited that he was able to get such a great first project! Definitely looking forward to this one! Starring – Sushant Rajput Singh, Rajkumar Yadav, and Amrita Puri (Aisha fame)

11. Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani – directed by Ayan Mukherjee (Wake Up Sid fame). Produced by Dharma Productions. Starring- Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor. This one will be a romantic movie starring ex flames Ranbir and Deepika – definitely want to watch this one – maybe they’ll have more chemistry now that they aren’t together in real life.

12. Lootera- newcomer director. Starring – Ranvir Singh and Sonakshi Sinha. I have a soft spot for Ranvir…but I don’t really like Sonakshi Sinha – she hasn’t proved that she can act and she isn’t that great to look at lol The girl can dance which is a plus – hopefully they both are great in this one!

13. Himmatwala – directed by Sajid Khan. Starring Ajay Devgan and debutant Tamanah. I’m not sure how I feel about this because I loved the 80s Himmatwala with Jeetendra and Sridevi even though it was a hugeeeeee cheese fest but it was huge in the 80s and I loved Sridevi! I’ll probably watch this one out of curiosity…Sajid’s housefull 2 really sucked I hope he goes does a better job with the comedy in this one..

14. Shootout at Wadala – directed by Sanjay Gupta. This movie has been in the new for I don’t know how long…this better be good…Shootout at Lokhandwala was pretty good. The cast is awesome! Ekta Kapoor has been lucky with her productions lately so lets hope this one is another feather in her cap after The Dirty Picture. Starring – John Abraham, Anil Kapoor, and Kangana Ranaut.

15.Race 2 – directed by duo Abbas-Mustan. The first Race was awesome! Going to pretend Players never happened lol. Starring – Saif Ali Khan, John Abraham, Deepika Padukone, Jacqueline Fernandez, Anil Kapoor, and Ameesha Patel

Review: Barfi!

Anurag Basu’s Barfi is by far one of the best movies to come out this year! Barfi celebrates love of everything life has to offer and Basu does  this by creating an emotionally stirring ride with sprinkles of  light hearted humor and power packed performances by the lead cast.As the writer Basu, creates a whimsical world with the characters of Barfi, Jhilmil, & Shruti. The movie takes you along a journey of these three characters  across three different timelines with Darjeeling and Kolkata as the backdrop. I don’t want to give away too much about the story other than the fact that it’s a rare gem in Bollywood that offers happiness as it’s gift to the viewer. I could tell that this movie was made with a lot of care and love because each frame is beautifully etched with a wonderful background score and soundtrack coupled with memorable performances. (Check out my soundtrack review for Barfi! amazing.)

This movie could not have been made without Ranbir Kapoor. Ranbir Kapoor has always chosen unconventional roles over the past few years. Each character is different from the last and he brings so much depth into each role whether it was Rajneeti or Rockstar and now Barfi. Ranbir is so unbelievably convincing as the deaf and mute boy that in the first few minutes of the movie you’re in awe and then you’re completely immersed in his portrayal of Barfi! I truly believe that Ranbir Kapoor will be the Aamir Khan of Gen Y. He is so methodical and so committed to each movie and it definitely comes through on the silver screen. With Barfi, Ranbir will not only walk away with accolades but the box office recognition as well. (The collections and advanced booking for this movie has been amazing -it’s collected more than Agneepath on it’s first day!)

Priyanka Chopra’s portrayal of Jhilmil was amazing and far better than Shahrukh Khan’s portrayal of autism in My Name is Khan. Jhilmil is another powerhouse performance for Priyanka. I feel that she’s experimented the most out of all the actresses in Bollywood and always sinks her teeth into the role whether it was a marathi mulgi in Kaminey or the crazy widower in 7 Khoon Maaf. Another feather in her cap!

Illeana D’Cruz as Shruti provided strong support to the characters of Barfi and Jhilmil. This is Illeana’s first Bollywood movie but her perfomance is so flawless that one forgets that  this is her debut.  Illeana  looks beautiful but also brings out a perfect balance of emotions throughout the movie. Another South Indian actress that is here to stay in Bollywood – for sure!

Barfi is not the typical commerical entertainer that Bollywood churns out every other week. So if you’re looking for a Karan Johar type of deal – you will  definitely be disappointed. However I feel that Ranbir’s Barfi can win that audience over with his meetha (sweet) and relatable character of Barfi. Barfi was not made for a commercial audience but I feel that this particular movie will definitely satisfy typical commerical moviegoers. There isn’t much wrong with Barfi in my opinion but I just wish they didn’t have those confusing timeline jumps and that the length of the movie was trimmed for a greater impact.

Barfi is a feel good movie! Appreciate all that you have in life because there are so many people that don’t have what we have and still they find the beauty and happiness in life!

Highly recommended! (My husband liked this movie more than some of the movies I’ve dragged him to…and he’s not a Bollywood buff  or fan lol – that says a lot).

Z4B Take: 4 out of 5

“In My City” Priyanka Chopra feat. Will.i.am

So the entire single is out! But my thoughts and feelings are mixed…I appreciate Priyanka’s voice but everything else about the song is so “old”…the lyrics aren’t as catchy as they should be for her first international single. Will.i.am is wasted in this song. I don’t find this super original because it feels like she’s been made to ape Katy Perry and Gaga throughout the song. I like that there are a few “desi” influences at the start of the song….

I love PC and I’m really hoping her album is a lot better than her first international single. Props to her for  debut during Thursday Night Football…fingers crossed for her entire album!

What are your thoughts? Does it live up to your expectations?

Check out the entire single:

Priyanka Chopra’s In My City Sneak Peek

So here is Priyanka Chopra’s Sneak Peek for her first international single” In My City”, the official video song is going to be released a little later. But she sounds great except for the “cccome on” part – kinda sounded like she was aping Lady Gaga…i guess it’s fine b/c Lady Gaga and her have the same label Red One. What are your thoughts? Excited about her International Album/Debut?

On another note…she needs to fire her stylist and get a new one.
